Did You Know?: Direct Access to Physical Therapy
Date Published: January 31, 2023
As of 2020, the American Physical Therapy Association has required all physical therapists to graduate with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from an accredited program. The transition to a DPT degree allows physical therapists to independently evaluate your musculoskeletal condition but also determine when a referral to another specialist, such as your primary care physician (a medical doctor), an orthopedic specialist, or even a cardiologist is appropriate. If there is a condition that a physical therapist cannot treat, they can refer out to another specialist for imaging, follow-up, or additional consultation. The doctors of physical therapy at Accelerate Physical Therapy have been trained to assess and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and are able to screen for other conditions that may warrant the services of a medical doctor if necessary. Many patients will benefit from the services of a physical therapist and will see better outcomes the sooner they are able to be evaluated and treated.
How This Helps Our Clients
Considering all of our physical therapists at Accelerate have DPT degrees, our clients are able to access us directly in times of injury or physical limitation. This allows us to eliminate the middleman and save our clients from additional costly copays, deductibles, and fees associated with many medical doctor visits. This has the added benefit of reducing time lags to evaluation and treatment of an injury to the musculoskeletal system and continuity of your plan of care.
Some Fine Print
The conditions of direct access vary based upon the state you live in. Some states have approved for unrestricted access while others allow for direct access with some restrictions. The state of California allows for ongoing evaluation and treatment from a physical therapist for 12 visits or 45 calendar days, whichever comes first. Many common orthopedic conditions can be treated and resolved within this time period. However, after the benchmark of 12 visits or 45 days have passed, the physical therapist must have a signed plan of care or referral from a medical doctor to continue treatment.
NOTE: There are some exceptions to accessing a DPT directly depending on your specific insurance plan. Please review our previous blog “Understanding Medical Insurance and Physical Therapy Benefits” to determine if your insurance plan requires a medical doctor referral before you see a physical therapist.
